Hi,

i'm currentrly working with an Analog Camera who is connected to a NI PCI 1405 Framegrabber on Intel Pentium 4 CPU, Windows 2000 with LabView 8.5, NI-Runtime 9.0,  NI-Vision Run-Time 9.0, NI-DAQmx 8.6, NI-IMAQ 3.8, NI-Serial 3.3,  NI-Motion 7.6. But i want to upgrade my system to a Digital Camera with Firewire. The thing is that i only had like 40h of lessons in Labview so i know the basics but thats all.  i didnt do the programm myself but i want to do the modifications.

Labview takes a picture and the programm i'm working with does image processing. So i have few questions:

-If i switch to Firewire with an other camera with an other resolution, do i have to change the programm so the picture taken has the same resolution as before? resize (crop) the image after the acquisition.

-do i only need to change the part of the Vi where it takes the picture and send it to the computer? (Acquisition) yes you do, analog acquisition functions are different from IMAQdx (IMAQdx is the driver for USB, FireWire and GigE)

-Do i need other drivers? if yes are they free? you need IMAQdx which is a part of VAS (Vision Acquisition Software) and for image processing you need VDM (Vision Development Module), apparently you already have a licence because you have IMAQ installed, you will simply need to find you VAS CD and install IMAQdx from it.

- Is it hard to do for a Noob like me? if you're not the one who developed the original app then it will not be an easy task... but of course it depends how complicated is the image acquisition part of the application, I have upgraded a few old prohjects from Analog to digital image acquisition and really you need to understand well how the acquisition part is implmented in the original app and also to be confortable with how it works in IMAQdx. If you need further help, post some code to show the image acquisition.

- If i wanna change my computer (its really old ...) to a computer on windows 7, do i have to make a lots of changes in the programm? hmmm... be carefull and before you do that check the OS support of your NI softwares.

from this link you'll see that IMAQ 3.8 comes in VAS 8.5, and the corresponding IMAQdx is 3.1 (that's what you have in your CD), from this link you can see the IMAQdx - LabVIEW compatibility, for IMAQdx 3.1 it's LabVIEW 7.1.1 to LabVIEW 8.5.1. And finaly from here (couldn' find it in english because NI's website is crap at managing languagues) you can see that IMAQdx 3.1 is not compatible with Windows 7, you need at least IMAQdx 3.6, that means VAS 2010.03 at least so you'll need an upgrade (not free) is you want to move to WIndows 7.

One last suggestion, if you need further help with switching from analog acquisition to digital, create a new discussion in the machine vision section.
